Phe, or Pe, is the Hebrew letter which begins verse 26. This letter depicts an open mouth with a tongue in the middle. This verse is speaking of the social relationship between a husband and wife.
Because the virtuous woman is clothed with strength and honor, when she opens her mouth to speak, she doesn’t detract from the conversation or speak foolishly. She adds wisdom – but with love, not haughtiness. Her husband is never worried about what she might say or whether or not she will embarrass him.
Nothing is worse than being at a party with people who love to talk about things of which they know nothing. Trying to impress people, they make complete fools of themselves because they lack wisdom. Then there are those who use the Word of God as a sword to run others through. They have great “head” knowledge of the Word, but they have not mixed it with love in their hearts. The lack kindness and consideration for others.
Imagine what it would be like married to one of these people. Whether they lack wisdom or kindness or both, it is embarrassing to everyone when they open their mouths to speak, but us is especially embarrassing to their spouse. There is an old saying, “You can dress her up but you can’t take her out.” How sad to be married to a woman who looks great, but every time she opens her mouth, you want to crawl into a hole.
One of the biggest benefits of being married to a virtuous woman or to a godly man is being able to socialize with them without fear of being embarrassed or criticized. You are uplifted and enriched by their conversation, and they are a joy for you to be with, either alone or with others.
